2024 MSV Miata Trophy

Rounds 11 & 12 – Cadwell Park

This was our first visit to the terrific Cadwell Park since 2020, so it was a weekend I was really looking forward to. Friday was spent familiarising myself with the track and getting up to speed. It was all going well until the gearbox broke mid afternoon, so a big thank you to Alex and the boys for fitting the spare in the evening.

We were greeted by very thick fog on race day and the meeting start was delayed. We eventually got out for qualifying, where the conditions were mixed – all but dry in the fast corner, then damp and greasy under the trees in the Hall Bends. The lap times came down for everyone throughout the session, but was a bit disappointed with my own performance, finishing up fifth fastest overall. This put me fourth on the grid – time was short so SuperPole was cancelled and Will Blackwell-Chambers would start from the back as he was a guest driver.

I felt much better in the race. It started well, as I went straight into third and then overtook Alex for second at the end of the first lap. I was then able to catch Declan and with an eye on the championship I decided to shadow him. I wasn’t prepared to to risk all, with wet grass and race 2 coming up soon after (we thought). I finished second, just 0.3 seconds behind at the flag.

Unfortunately, the weather closed in and as the fog got thicker the entire meeting was abandoned.

We go to Oulton Park next at the end of September, which could be a pivotal race meeting in the context of the championship season.
