Setting the pace in Wales

2024 MSV Miata Trophy

Rounds 7 & 8 – Anglesey Coastal

July marked our annual trip to North Wales for rounds 7 & 8 at Anglesey Circuit. I was a little disappointed after Donington, so we were determined to do well. Friday testing went well and we were eagerly looking forward to race day.

In contrast to two weeks earlier, qualifying went very well. I set two quick times early on and headed for the pits, as I didn’t think I would be able to beat them. Fastest in the main session, I then followed that up with first in SuperPole!

Race one was as straightforward as I think I have ever had in my racing career; I got away in the lead and edged away while trying to look after my tyres. The cars behind started to dice, so the gap grew nicely. I did have one scary moment when the car briefly cut out, so I stayed away from kerbs after that and brought it home for my first win this year.

Between races, we changed the offending kill switch which solved the electrical problem. We also saw Declan Lee fitting new tyres, so I knew he would be faster in race two as they give you an exceptionally large boost of pace round this circuit.

I led from the off but before long Lee was on my tail. I was ahead for longer than I expected and we had a close fight, but I sustained some damage. Ultimately I dropped to second place, but it was a little dubious, as I was overtaken on the grass. At the end the clerk thought it was fair, so no action was taken. I drove some good laps after that but I met the limit of the tyres near the end and ran wide through the fast Church corner, so wasn’t able to mount a challenge.

Overall it was a successful weekend; fastest in the qualifying session, in SuperPole and winning race one with a good podium in race two. We’re really looking forward to Snetterton next month.
