2022 BRSCC Mazda MX-5 SuperCup.
Round 8, Snetterton 300 Circuit.
The final races of the 2022 BRSCC Mazda MX-5 SuperCup were held at Snetterton. There was plenty of entertainment – and talking points – as the season came to an end. The racing was hard and close, with championship positions and the overall title up for grabs. I began the weekend fifth in the standings, but with an outside chance of third.
Qualifying was a disaster! I was off the pace and finished up in 13th place. Predictably though, I had some pretty spicy races. After a few frantic early laps of race one, I found myself in tenth for the most part, on the back of the main pack but unable to make too much of an impression. By the flag I had moved up to finish seventh, not far at all behind fourth place. Pretty good progress considering the qualifying pace, but it would have been nice to start higher and run at the front of this pack.
Race two didn’t go quite as smoothly, as I was on the outside for turn one and was pushed wide, losing several places. This put me into a midfield battle, which – while good fun – did mean the chance of a good result evaporated as we fell back from the leaders. I ended up at the front of the group, albeit in eleventh place.
The third and final race of the year was one of my best. Not happy with the handling in race two, we made some changes and it made a big difference. There were cars everywhere on lap one, and I dropped down two places, to 13th. As the race wore on, I was able to pick people off and take advantage of the odd incident. I set my fastest lap when in a tow, but nevertheless it was still significantly quicker than in race two. Sixth at the flag and in the front group was a good result from eleventh on the grid.
All of this fun and games, plus results of other drivers meant I finished up fourth in the championship. At the start of the season I would have taken this, but I really wanted more pace and to be able to fight for wins. However, fourth out of 38 pro class drivers in a championship as competitive as the SuperCup (including missing a round), is a good result.
I’d like to thank our mechanic Terry for his fantastic work this year, as well as Alex and crew at Miller Motorsport. Cambridge FD, Bexhill Property Maintenance and my other partners have all been brilliant and of course the biggest thanks go to my Dad, without whom none of this would be possible.
We’ll look to make some changes over the winter and work to get into position to take those race wins in 2023!
